I was abused eight years ago, and am just now remembering what happened.

I am not depressed or anything, I just know what happened. Is just talking to friends ok, or is counseling necessary?

I can only speak for me, I couldn't have done it without the help of a good therapist.

With friends you're like a beggar at their door, "please help me". Whereas I choose to think of my therapist as the "hired help". In a way that empowers me.

That said, I couldn't have healed the way I have without good friends as well, withouth this site as a third "partner in healing".

Let's say you had a friend who came to you and spoke about a shameful secret.

Let's say her father was an alcoholic. Whose behavior was unpredictable. Some nights he would come home loving with presents.

Other nights he would come home drunk and angry. Smashing furniture and physically beating your mother.

What advice would you offer your friend - seek a counsellor , keep it a secret, or talk to friends and counsellor ?

It is nice to have a good theripist especially when you are new to recovery. I have been in theripy for the abuse as a teen and it helped a great deal. It is great that you have friends that you feel comforable telling about your abuse to. Many people don't have that obtion. I see it as building a house--you would contact the approprate professionals to help you design the right house for you. A theripst can be your guide and coach in your recovery.
